Reviving Art and Culture in Downtown Pontiac

If you’ve been to downtown Pontiac lately, you may have noticed any number of sizable, brightly colored photos and paintings plastered all along building sides. These “canvases” are all a part of a unique community initiative called Canvas Pontiac.

Sponsored by the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Pontiac Downtown Business Association, Canvas Pontiac gives regional artists the opportunity to bring their unique style and vision to the downtown Pontiac community.

Last year, their call for artists reached over 1,000 people and this year’s competition is even bigger and better as Canvas Pontiac is now accepting various mediums.

If you’re interested in taking a look, you need to act fast. Tomorrow (6/11) is the awards celebration, where the winners will be announced at ELEKTRICITY Night Club in Pontiac from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Tickets are $5 and include food, drink and entertainment, as well as a silent auction.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, the PUSH 22 team would like to encourage you to take some time to check out the art and support a thriving (and often overlooked) community.
