For the third installment in our four-part series on some of the greatest sports quotes and how they relate to marketers, we’re turning our attention to the Great White North, and my homeland, for some legendary advice from Wayne Gretzky. And we’re positive even Joe Bowen would agree – this post isn’t just a good one ... it’s a great one.
#3. “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.” – Wayne Gretzky
Is your brand always in reactive mode rather than proactive mode? Are you always trying to keep up with your closest competitor? Early in their business, it’s a scenario that Apple could have easily ended up in with its larger and more prominent competitor, Microsoft. Luckily, being out in California, Steve Jobs had heard of The Great One. Job’s once said, “There’s an old Wayne Gretzky quote I love: ‘I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.’ And we’ve always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very beginning. And we always will.”
Beyond its software and products, one could argue that this is a philosophy Apple has integrated into every aspect of their business, from their revolutionary branding and advertising to the way their stores are run and set up – their ability to anticipate future trends has made them one of the most popular and successful brands on the face of the earth.
Whenever you're struggling to find ways to grow your brand, just think: What Would Wayne Do? Success rarely ever comes to those who just go with the flow and follow the crowd. Innovate, get into open space, make some room for yourself and take a shot at doing something different.
